Birth story + Newborn Pictures

February 14th was a special day. Valentine’s and the due date of our baby girl! since I didn’t feel like we would be spending it in the hospital, Todd and I went on one last date! Andria’s in the Ventura Harbor Village is our favorite place, so it seemed fitting!

we spent the rest of the weekend relaxing…just the 2 of us!

on Monday, February 16 {president’s day!} I woke up around 5:30am feeling a bit uncomfortable.  nothing to be alarmed about, just some tightening here and there.  I woke up Todd by accident and we decided he wouldn’t rush to work and we were able to go back to sleep.  when we got up a few hours later, I was still having the same feelings! my contractions were very inconsistent…but enough to decide today was the day! I showered and got ready {who knew when I was going to be able to do that again!} and we tried to relax.  around 10:30 we contemplated going to the hospital, but I was so inconsistent {6 min to like 15 minutes} that I wanted to wait so they didn’t turn me away! finally around 3:00 Todd put his foot down…and thank goodness he did! we left around 3:30, and the 40 minute ride to the hospital was difficult! I was definitely feeling more pain and the red lights did not help!

I was admitted upon arrival {around 4:30} and everything was so different than I imagined after that! everyone was calm and moving slowly. I was put into a triage room, given a gown and hooked up to the monitors for me and the baby. when I was checked at 5:30pm, I was only 3.5-4 cm! such a let down since I was 2.5-3 the week before at my appointment and I already felt like I was dealing with a lot of pain! by 7:30 I got my epidural {I definitely didn’t need to be the hero that day!} and it was AMAZING!! it was like night and day! I could have a conversation, relax and was definitely not as worried! at 8:30 pm I was STILL only 4 cm…

fast forward to 12:15…I was 6 cm and my water broke. and apparently that kick started our little girl! we were moved into the delivery room and by 2:15 am {now February 17th} I was 10 cm! I think started pushing around 2:45 and after about an hour and a half, our beautiful Aubrey was born!

my experience was so wonderful at Kaiser! I think I had crazy thoughts about how horrible it could be, so it ended up seeming very pleasant! since we were up early Monday and had no sleep that night, her first day was difficult! we spent one night in the hospital and were home in the early afternoon on Wednesday! although we were only there for less than 48 hours, being in the hospital was the hardest part. I never really felt comfortable and I just couldn’t wait to sleep in my own bed and take a good shower!

the first week at home is definitely a blur of breastfeeding, restless nights, and naps and pajamas all day. we got through though! on her 5th and 12th days {because I’m that crazy} we had pictures taken and they are ones I will cherish forever!

Bumpdate Catch-up {37-40 weeks}

well, I’m not sure what happened to the time…but its March?! I didn’t just fall behind on bumpdates, but I fell REALLY behind! our baby girl is here! now that I feel about halfway normal {some days, jammies are acceptable for a 24 hour period} I’m hoping to not only catch up on bumpdates, but introduce our precious girl {if you follow me on Instagram you’ve already seen an overload of photos!} and continue this blogging adventure! now that nap time has started, here we go!

{catching up}

how far along:

  • 37 weeks
  • 38 weeks
  • 39 weeks
  • 40 weeks

size of baby:

  • winter melon {18.9-20.9 inches, 6.2-9.2 pounds}
  • pumpkin {18.9-20.9 inches, 6.2-9.2 pounds}
  • watermelon {18.9-20.9 inches, 6.2-9.2 pounds}
  • jackfruit {18.9-20.9 inches, 6.2-9.2 pounds}

gender: precious baby girl!

weight gain:

  • 154 {up 28 pounds}
  • 154 {still 28!}
  • 156 {up 30 pounds total}

maternity clothes: the last few weeks I definitely went for comfort all the time! I think I wore my Jessica Simpson maternity jeans a couple of days, but for the most part I lived in my leggings from the Gap or pajamas! 🙂

stretch marks: kept them away with my Mustela cream for my whole pregnancy! who knows if its really the lotion, but its definitely worth the expense either way!

rings: off {starting at 32 weeks}

nursery: has been done! just missing a canvas print or two on the wall above her crib!

movement: these last few weeks I could tell she was getting a little cramped in there. still feeling movements, but not quite as often or as much at one time.  she is definitely lower and I can feel her hitting my hips!

symptoms: pretty tired in these last couple weeks, but mostly just anxious/excited! it’s gotten more difficult to do easy tasks like get out of bed and tie my shoes…but its totally worth it! {who needs to wear tennis shoes anyway?!}

labor signs: feeling lots of braxton hicks! at 38 weeks I was about 2 cm. at my 39 week appointment I was 3 cm and 50% effaced!

sleep: sleeping good, minus the frequent bathroom breaks.  a few random days I had a difficult time getting back to sleep, but when I stopped working I started taking more naps which was really nice!

cravings: I cannot WAIT to have a turkey sandwich, sushi and a blue moon! {not together, though}

aversions: nothing specific.

what I miss: anything I could be missing is totally worth it for this little girl! we are so excited for her to be here!

best moment this week:

  • 37: had a fun time going out to LA to dinner and to see Eric Church at the Staples Center!IMG_1385  iphone 03.01.15 1055
  • 38: we took a CPR and First Aid class with the grandparents to be and auntie to be! learned a lot and are ready for our little one!

IMG_1408  IMG_1401

  • 39: we made it past Todd’s birthday weekend! as special as it would have been for baby girl and her daddy to share their special days, as someone who shares her day with her mom and aunt, I was glad we passed it without her debut…I got a lot of errands, pampering and relaxing done this week! and we got to see our girl at a radiology appointment to check on her growth.  at my appointment my tummy was measuring a bit smaller so the doctor just wanted to be sure she was on track. she was! just had lowered in my belly so it threw off the measurement!
  • 40: lots of free time this week…just soaking up these last few days with the hubby {even though I’m pretty impatient now} we had a date night at the Ventura Harbor on her due date weekend! Andria’s restaurant has been a significant place for us since 2007 when we “officially” became boyfriend and girlfriend and we have loved going there ever since!

looking forward to: meeting our baby girl!!!

Bumpdate {36 weeks}

January 21, 2015

how far along: 36 weeks, 4 days

size of baby: a honeydew {17.2-18.7 inches, 4.2-5.8 pounds}

gender: baby girl!

weight gain: up 29 pounds! so much for doing so well the last few weeks…definitely caught up with me!

maternity clothes: all the time! I want to live in leggings or jammies!

stretch marks: keeping them away with my Mustela cream!

rings: off {starting at 32 weeks}

nursery: just missing a baby!

movement: always moving around! I’m definitely feeling more in my hips and lower areas…and smaller parts, like feet and elbows I think!

symptoms: feeling pretty lucky that I still feel good! I get the occasional discomfort in my back and feet if I’m standing for long periods, but just a general fatigue I think! I definitely feel better with a little nap or rest on the couch! I also feel pretty tight in my abdomen area after I’ve been laying down a while.  things are stretching and cramping I think…

labor signs: feeling some irregular little contractions every once in a while, but that’s it!

sleep: sleeping well still! {poor hubby says I must be sleeping really well because I’ve developed a slight snoring habit…hope this goes away when the baby weight does!}

cravings: toppers pizza, doughnuts, & cereal…totally healthy, right?!

aversions: nothing specific.

what I miss: the ability to get up and down easily!

best moment this week: nothing specific this week, but every day is exciting because we are getting that much closer! {I wouldn’t call it the best moment, but we had our labor and delivery class last night at Kaiser! we’re definitely on information overload…I’m not sure if I needed to know all of that stuff!}

looking forward to: decorating onesies and other baby crafts this afternoon with a couple of friends, one with an adorable baby girl and the other with a little boy on the way! also a fun night out with the hubby and my sister and her boyfriend this Friday to go see Eric Church! may be our last hoo rah for a while!

Maternity Photos {by Alexandra Kayy Photography}

the end of my pregnancy is coming quickly {one month from today!!} and I had to get in one last opportunity to capture the memory of this special time! we’ve hired Alex, of Alexandra Kayy Photography to take pictures of our little girl throughout her whole first year of life, but first mommy and daddy got to be in a session!

I have had visions of these photos for a while now {including the dress and revisiting our wedding venue} and I can honestly say that my vision has come to life and then some! Alex did a beautiful job capturing the magic of Maravilla Gardens that we had fallen in love with on our wedding day, and did a pretty great job making us look good 2.5 years later too 🙂

enjoy our pictures and check out both Alex and Maravilla on their Facebook {photography, venue} and Instagram {photography, venue} pages!

labor signs: we are getting close so I figured I’d add this! just some braxton hicks contractions…

we also had an appointment with our doctor and saw the little one! she is head down and face down, getting ready! we also had a labor and delivery tour and I haven’t decided if it’s made me more nervous or prepared. either way…it means we are so close! {gotta finish packing that hospital bag!}

looking forward to: a slow paced week with no plans for the weekend!

Bumpdate {34 weeks}

January 6, 2015 {Happy New Year!}

sleep: again…can’t get enough! love me some naps and bedtime!

cravings: salty, sweet, repeat…

aversions: had a weird feeling towards eggs this week…something about the texture threw me off but hoping it was just a fluke.

what I miss: energy! I have a feeling that is going to continue for months to come!

best moment this week: really enjoyed spending so many days at home with the hubby, family & friends {especially with my bestie who was visiting from Boston for the holidays!}

we had a quiet but nice New Year’s Eve and I feel really good after all of the stuff we got done around the house in those 5 days off! even had some girl time spent with my MIL & SIL making a few fun wedding decisions with her! {6 months left until my sister-in-law’s wedding!} I’m thinking all work weeks should be 2 days with a 5 day weekend! anyone else?!

looking forward to: our maternity session {yes, another one…but its the last until she arrives, I promise!} with Alexandra Kayy Photography tomorrow! cannot wait to see how they come out…I’ve planned a couple details that I hope make them perfect!

nursery: I think it is actually done…for now.  there are just a couple more things that need to go on the walls {one is on order from Etsy and the others are waiting on her indecisive parents to choose her name and to get some photos printed}! I even got all her blankets, swaddles and some clothes and gowns washed!

movement: lots and lots of movement still! I’m noticing some a little lower now…maybe she is getting cozier down in there!

symptoms: so glad I’ve been leg cramp free this week!! hydration and making sure I’m good with my vitamins must be the trick!! still having some back pain…I don’t expect this to go away as the weeks progress! I really need to keep doing my prenatal yoga {oops}!

sleep: cannot get enough…and sleeping well considering I get up 3-4 times to use the bathroom!

movement: so much movement, all throughout the day! I love it!

symptoms: some back pain still, but was actually not so bad this weekend! getting a little uncomfortable in general throughout the day. after sitting or standing too long. laying down on my side with my Bumpnest seems to provide the most relief! a recent development is waking up to excruciating cramps in my calves!! trying to take in extra electrolytes, potassium and calcium this week! hope it helps!

looking forward to: Christmas this week!! we are basically done shopping {finishing up a couple errands this afternoon} so we just have to wrap tomorrow! can’t wait for yummy dinners and time with the fam!

Maternity Photos {by Kim Harvey Photography at 31 weeks}

one thing that I haven’t skipped out on this pregnancy is photographing it! with so much inspiration from fellow bloggers and that darn Pinterest {I mean, I have a whole board for maternity photos!}, I’ve had many visions in my head of photos I wanted to take and have taken! I figure we’re only going to have our first baby once and that is a big reason to document this pregnancy and have the memories of this special time to cherish for years to come!

when a past co-worker and friend of mine approached me after starting her photography business, I knew we had to set up a session! it was so fun to try different poses, walk barefoot in the sticks and just have a great time with someone so easy to be silly and relaxed around {even relaxed enough to do a mini boudoir session in the middle of a field…but we’ll keep those photos for another time – maybe?}! Kim did an amazing job of capturing me and my belly in the light and airy photos I was dreaming of!

enjoy the beautiful photos she took and head over to her facebook page to see the wonderful family, newborn & portrait sessions she has posted!

my dress – forever 21 {borrowed from a friend, but found it online}

maternity clothes: for sure! still rocking my regular pj’s and comfy clothes at home…but we all know how that works out!

stretch marks: keeping them away with my Mustela cream!

rings: on…but I’m thinking I should remove them for a bit, just so they don’t get uncomfortable!

what I miss: being able to walk through Ikea without feeling like I ran a marathon!

best moment this week: we were busy bees last week! decorated {minimally} for Christmas, checked off many lines on the baby to-do list, had a 3-d ultrasound & I had photos taken!!

the hubby was a trooper this weekend and we had “a really big day” on Saturday {side note-I’ve never seen this movie – can you name it? –  but Todd and a friend of  mine keep referencing it, so naturally it’s all I think about when writing about a Saturday morning filled with errands}.  we ordered the stroller {which has arrived and is AMAZING!}, picked out a side table from Ikea {but still have to go back to find it because it was sold out}, found some super cute decor at Hobby Lobby AND explored Buy Buy Baby for the first time!! thank goodness Hobby Lobby and Buy Buy Baby aren’t just right around the corner from our house! it was my first time at both stores and I can officially say I’m addicted!!

on Monday we spent the morning and evening at Kaiser for an appointment and Baby Care Basics! so much information! let’s hope we remember how to swaddle and bathe her 2 months from now 😉
