Big Girl Room Design

How my first baby is ready for a big girl room is beyond me! Time is a thief but as much as I’d like to keep her little forever, I think she is ready for this step.  She is creating her own opinions and growing up to be such a strong, loving, yet stubborn girl.  Daily I find myself treading between “cultivate her leadership skills” and “this girl is going to drive me to the crazy house” – but that is whole other blog post!

(A photo collage is necessary, obviously because this milestone calls for some serious reminiscing!)

For now, let’s stick to the easy stuff! Designing a space is so much fun! We are keeping the overall feel of her room the same – neutrals with pink accents and lots of unicorns – just updating! We got a rocking unicorn from Pottery Barn as well as a couple matching stuffed animals from her baby shower and she has grown to LOVE her “uni’s”.

We love the Jenny Lind crib that both of the girls have and I was so excited to see that there was a matching twin bed. I wasn’t so excited about the price though! After a little searching, I found a Jenny Lind option from Walmart. How exciting, right?! And a much better price point.

After the bed, I was searching for bedding and ultimately Target was the place! The Pillowfort collection was perfect for style and price and even outside of the Pillowfort collection, the comforter was very reasonable! I know the pillows and comforter will end up on the floor or touched with sticky hands and I couldn’t bring myself to make the investment from Pottery Barn or Land of Nod, unfortunately! The best part is that they have had a unicorn head to mount to the wall that I’ve had my eye on for months! This flower is the perfect shade of pink and I just know Aubrey will be obsessed with the ballerina doll! The crown pillow is the perfect princess accent and I cannot wait to create a little reading/hang out nook with the canopy! The ruffly comforter is the perfect girly touch along with the metallic heart sheets that match the canopy!

We’ve had some wall decor waiting to hang since we’ve remodeled, so I cannot wait to get it all situated! I’ll definitely share the ‘after’ pictures once we’ve got it set up!

That was the easy part – now I just have to figure out how to make the transition to a bed from her crib! Any tips?

Happy humpday! May the rest of your week be a good one!

Harvest Crush

Something I should have added to my Fall Bucket List: Grape Smashing!  The Stonehaus is a local winery in our area and has such a fun atmosphere. From date night to a girls lunch, you can go casual or dress up and I always have a fun time.

My friend Sharon, from Mama Chit Chat found an event they were hosting and we knew it would be the perfect girls afternoon! Wine tasting, grape harvesting, and stomping them like Lucy?! I’m in!

IMG_9647IMG_9643IMG_9660

I bought this dress months ago and was super excited to wear it. Unfortunately it was my first Knox Rose (at Target) purchase and I didn’t realize how big their items run! I bought my typical size and took the tags off without even trying it on – rookie maneuver, I know. Although it was a little potato sack-like, I still decided to wear it! Since I bought it so long ago, I couldn’t find it in this color online (there is black!!) but I found some adorable options! I just love this brand!

Harvesting was first…although I’m not sure who’s idea it was to give a bunch of wine tasters those sharp cutters 😉 We filled our bucket in no time and quickly headed to the smashing station.

IMG_9669IMG_9670IMG_9674

We all dumped our buckets and tried our best not to slip onto our butts while we smashed, laughed, and smashed some more.

IMG_9712IMG_9699IMG_9695IMG_9705

So grateful for some “mama time” with one of my faves and an experience that I’ll sure remember! Also grateful that Sharon and I like each other enough to not end up like Lucy during her grape stomping experience, haha!

Color Inspiration | October 2017

img_5475

Black is so classic. It’s neutral, it’s strong, it’s bold, it’s clean, and it’s slimming! What’s not to love? Whether your wardrobe consists of mostly black, you love the rich look of a black car, or you’re just in the Halloween sprit – I think it is safe to say black may be the most popular color overall. Sharon from Mama Chit Chat and I are hosting our monthly link up to share what is inspiring us this month – B L A C K. Grab the graphic below and share what’s inspiring you by using the link tool!

IMG_9937

black manicure. I used to think black was too bold for my nails, or that it was only for rock n’ roll chicks. Now when fall rolls around, I see October as the perfect excuse for a moody mani! You?

img_4189

black tank. I could probably wear some version of a black tank, tee, or long sleeve everyday if I let myself. It’s easy, goes with pretty much any bottom, and typically always flattering. The tassels on this tank give it something a little extra and I think helps transition from summer to our Southern California “fall”. I couldn’t find this one online (I got it at Old Navy in the middle of summer) but this one is super cute with the lace detail!

p.s. I was wearing this same tank at the pumpkin patch too!

dolce vita black

black sandals. I think I mentioned these in a past Five on Friday post and I still love them! They’re easy to slip on, comfortable, and still look like a step up from just your average flip flop.

Rainstone

black diffuser. I cannot wait to set this up in our soon to be industrial farm inspired office! I’ve had my eye on the Rainstone diffuser since I started with Young Living and I can’t believe I actually own it!

img_8525

black bike. I am so excited to finally have a beach cruiser! I am looking forward to just riding around the neighborhood, to our sisters’ houses, and especially to bring it camping. We’ve been wanting to be able to ride the kids around and explore when we go places so I cannot wait to test it out! The girls loved being pulled around in the trailer the other day, so I hope that lasts!

Have a wonderful October and hope you found some inspiration in all of my B L A C K things! Grab the graphic below and link up with us (open for a week)! We’d love to read and support one another! If you’ve missed past months, you can catch up here:

Five on Friday | National Coffee Day

The last Friday in September…where has the time gone! I’m so excited to bring on the fall activities. I am joining April, Christina, and Natasha for their 5 on Friday link up!

one | As if being Friday wasn’t exciting enough, today is National Coffee Day! You know I will be celebrating ALL. DAY. LONG.

two | Speaking of coffee, I checked one thing off my bucket list! I had my first Pumpkin Spice Latte. Every year I have to be festive and every year I feel like its not my thing. But I ordered it with only half of the flavor pumps and it was way better!

IMG_7986

three | I got those olive leggings from target a couple weeks ago and I LOVE them! High waisted, stretchy, and perfect for fall. They had a few other styles and I think I’ve gotta head back. They were on sale at the time, I’m not sure if they still are.

four | Sharon (from MamaChitChat) and I got to have the most fun experience over the weekend and I cannot wait to tell you all about it! I love going to the Stonehaus!

IMG_9705

five|Next week, the first Thursday of the month Sharon and I will be hosting our third month of our color inspiration link up! We would love you to participate and share!! Can’t wait to share all things black for October. You can check out August and September.

Workout Essentials

You heard it here first. Somehow from somewhere, I have found some motivation to get moving! I’ve been either pregnant or nursing for over 3 years now and a ‘fit pregnancy’ was never really my thing, unfortunately. I’ve always been an active person and I enjoy feeling strong and fit, it just hasn’t been my priority. It should be though. In the words of Elle Woods, “Exercise gives you endorphins, and endorphins make you happy! Happy people don’t go shoot their husbands [or yell at their kids so much]”.
As difficult as it is to start, once I’m going I know I’ll feel so good! I’ve invested in a few supportive, comfortable, and totally cute pieces that I know will up my workout game. If its good enough for Carrie Underwood to workout in, its good enough for me, right?!
Workout Essentials
I’ve been eyeing the CALIA by Carrie Underwood collection via Instagram and on occasion at Dick’s Sporting Goods, and finally jumped in. I got a couple different styles of sports bras, as well as a pair of leggings, and some shirts. The shirts so far have felt soft, and cool and the bras are supportive but comfortable! There are some new releases for fall so a few of the older items are on SALE!
I’ve had the Fit Bit Blaze for a couple of years but haven’t used it to its full capacity yet because, well I haven’t been working out! I’ll keep you posted on how it works out.
Water has been essential for me for a long time because I’ve been growing and feeding little humans and they require a lot from my body. I love using a glass bottle because I add essential oils to it to change things up and be more motivated to drink more! It also tastes so refreshing to have some citrus flavor!
Cool Azul will also be a new addition. I’ve made my own balms with essential oils and coconut oil for muscle support and relief, but I can’t wait to try this sports gel formulated especially for physical support.
Do you have any workout favorites that keep you motivated? I can’t wait to share my progress along the way! You can follow along with me on my Instagram and Facebook Page!

How to Plan: Family Photo Outfits

I love to take family photos.  Something about documenting a certain stage in life with beautiful photos brings me joy! Although I can’t always predict how it will go with two kids – (I leave it up to our amazing photographer to capture the magic that she does), I can make sure we look put together! I may spend a bit more time than some on deciding our outfits, but I’ve got a good system down and I love having something to shop for-whether its in a store or our closets!  Here’s some tips on choosing outfits for your family’s photo session:

one. Decide on a time frame/special occasion for your photos. Are you taking pictures for Christmas cards or a special birthday? Will you be taking them in the spring or the fall? Obviously if you’re taking photos in the summer you don’t want to be wearing sweaters and jeans and if its fall photos you’re doing, you may want the overall look to be more cozy!

7J9A0498AKP_9431

You can also add to this with accessories. Here in Southern California, there was really no need to have a blanket scarf in the fall, but it looked super cute on our Christmas Cards! For Aubrey’s first birthday photos, I added a party hat and a fun accessory to bring in her party theme just for a few photos.

two. Choose a location.  Your photographer may be able to help you with this – but once you have a time frame, location is a big factor in deciding our look.  Typically if I mention the beach or something rustic, our photographer Alex will have a few options up her sleeve for us.  I love light and bright colors on the beach. Keep in mind if you’re going somewhere that has specific colors or decor, you don’t want to clash or blend in. I’ve noticed browns and olive greens may not work in a more rustic location with lots of trees and long grass (which is obviously a setting I love).

three. Once you know when and where your session is taking place, the coordinating begins! Choose your starting outfit. For me, it’s typically mine (mama’s gotta look good, haha). I know my girls look cute in anything and it’s easy to find a shirt for my husband to go with anything. Sometimes my outfit is neutral, and sometimes it has a pattern or makes a statement. Once I’ve found something for me that goes with the overall feel I’m going for, I move on to the girls, and then my husband.

burgundy dress is LuLaRoe | floral and green ombre were both LC by Lauren Conrad at Kohls | white dress is Knox Rose at Target | sequin dress was from Rent the Runway

four. The kids. As cute as matching outfits are for two sisters, I like them to be different so they don’t just look like one blob. Since my girls are young, we tend to hold them often so I like some contrast. I usually do one in a pattern and one in a solid. Or two solids with different textures. Just some difference to make it interesting! Depending on your preference, you can choose a color from the pallet of your starting outfit, or an opposite yet complimenting color. One way I like to keep a bold look more simple is to keep something consistent like denim pants.

IMG_5963

AlexandraKayyPhotography_Family _67AlexandraKayyPhotography_Family _152AKP_newborn_54

The girls’ white outfit details are in a recent post.

five. My husband. For men, and especially those who don’t like to play dress up, simplicity is key. Family photos are not his idea of a great day, so I try to make his outfit as painless as possible! His go to look: pants and a button up. If I want a more dressed up look I find a long sleeve and he wears nicer shoes. If I want a more relaxed look, I go for a short sleeve and boots. I want to be sure we all look cohesive in this way.  If I have on a floor length dress, it only seems fitting that his shirt is a bit dressier and on the contrary, if the girls look more relaxed, I want us to also feel casual! His shirt is usually simple (unless our overall look needs a pattern or something) and compliments my outfit alone and the girls clothes. I always like to sneak in a photo of just us, so I want the two of us to look complimentary on our own.

7J9A1226AlexandraKayyPhotography_Family _96IMG_6213AKP_9582

The last tip is to find a photographer whose style you love and would want to see in your home. I found Alex from Alexandra Kayy Photography while I was pregnant with Aubrey and she has been capturing the special moments in our lives ever since! I love knowing that our memories are in good hands! She’s been at the hospital the day after my babies were born and documented our girls as they’ve grown. I cannot thank her enough for the gifts she has given us through photographs!

I hope you enjoy coordinating your family’s outfits for your next family photo session! Do you have any tried and true tips for good family photos? I’d love to hear!

Here’s a quick version of these tips:

one. Time frame/Season/Occasion

two. Location

three. Inspiration Outfit

four. Compliment with texture, pattern, solid, colors

five. Cohesive as a whole – bring in elements for consistency (i.e. denim)

Love your photographer!

Maternity Photos {by Kim Harvey Photography at 31 weeks}

one thing that I haven’t skipped out on this pregnancy is photographing it! with so much inspiration from fellow bloggers and that darn Pinterest {I mean, I have a whole board for maternity photos!}, I’ve had many visions in my head of photos I wanted to take and have taken! I figure we’re only going to have our first baby once and that is a big reason to document this pregnancy and have the memories of this special time to cherish for years to come!

when a past co-worker and friend of mine approached me after starting her photography business, I knew we had to set up a session! it was so fun to try different poses, walk barefoot in the sticks and just have a great time with someone so easy to be silly and relaxed around {even relaxed enough to do a mini boudoir session in the middle of a field…but we’ll keep those photos for another time – maybe?}! Kim did an amazing job of capturing me and my belly in the light and airy photos I was dreaming of!

enjoy the beautiful photos she took and head over to her facebook page to see the wonderful family, newborn & portrait sessions she has posted!

my dress – forever 21 {borrowed from a friend, but found it online}

my sweater – victoria’s secret {cannot find online…}

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things {my list}

the holidays are coming up fast and I’m welcoming them with open arms {and Jessica Simpson Holiday Pandora already}!  I’m so excited to link up with April, Elise, Katie, Zelle these next 3 weeks to share A Few of My Favorite Things for 2014!

This is Todd and I’s last year as a party of 2 and it’s a bittersweet feeling to know our holidays will never be the same {although I’m sure so so much better}! gone will be the focus on the two of us – and we will welcome the first time experience of the holidays through our little girl’s eyes, which I cannot wait for! until then, I’ll be keeping this year’s list about “wifey-Whitney”, not “new-mommy-Whitney” quite yet!

my list 2014

one. michael kors purse

I may be trading my designer bag for a diaper bag very soon, but I’ve loved this Michael Kors satchel for so long and I’m obsessed with this pale gold color!

two. bump nest pillow case

although this is a little mommy-related, this pillow is my life saver right now and my pillow case needs some love after so many washes and the daily wear!

three. monogram coffee mugs

I may be late on the monogram coffee mug band wagon, but I just love these from Anthropologie, or these gold ones from William Sonoma!

four. mac book pro

obviously a big ticket item, but I’m dreaming of the day I have a macbook! my laptop is just not cutting it and I’d love to have this beauty!

five. vince camuto boots

its almost winter, and who doesn’t love a pair of boots {especially when my shoes have been the only reliable item of “clothing” that have consistently fit me lately}.  these over the knee boots

head over to one of these gal’s blogs to join the link-up!

My_Favorite_Things_Linkup_2014

week 1 of the linkup series with April, Elise, Katie, & Zelle!

Five on Friday

today is friday, tomorrow is the official start of summer and I’ve recently added to my summer wardrobe and can’t wait to share my purchases!
five on friday 6.20.14
one. {floral maxi dress} who doesn’t love a comfortable maxi dress? I’ve worn it casual with sandals and a jean jacket in the evening and I can wait to wear it to the beach with a big floppy hat!
two. {blue dressy romper} love it or hate it, the romper can be dressed up or down! I love the material and ruffles on this romper and think it will be perfect paired with some pumps for an evening at a friend’s bachelorette party in San Diego this summer!
three. {camo shorts} neutral, stretchy and oh so comfortable! I love the way these shorts fit and that {to me} they are basically a neutral and I can add a pop of color or go easy with a black or tan top!
four. {neutral wedges} again…neutral and comfortable! I am obsessed with shoes {even though I hardly wear all the heels I own}.  I am more likely to grab these knowing they with be nice to my tootsies even if I wear them all afternoon!
five. {wifey tee} I’m loving the “wifey” trend! my hubby has always referred to me as his wifey {see how it all started below} and this tee is perfect for a casual date night!
hubby - wifey signs
have a fabulous weekend!
